When you are called out to work a winter storm event such as the ice storms that we have recently had, it's a little different than working a summer or spring storm. You need to prepare differently.
You will be making a long trip usually from where you live to the storm site and the roads will most likely be slick due to snow and ice. These are some things to get prepared now before you get the call to make sure you are not only ready but will BE safe.
Make sure that your vehicle is ready. Take a good look at the tires to make sure they are not worn, and they are properly inflated. How about your spare? Do you have one? Make sure you have fresh and adequate antifreeze in the radiator. Check the radiator hoses to make sure they're not cracked or worn.
Change the oil, and check the windshield wipers to include the fluid. Often big trucks will pass you spewing muddy or dirty water onto your windshield making it difficult to see. You want your wipers to work!!!! Make sure all the brake lights/tail lights are working.
Inside the vehicle, carry a small blanket and pillow with you for the JUST IN CASE scenarios, and keep water and snack food with you. Take a flashlight, jumper cables, a small tool set (ratchets and screw drivers).
Keep a cell phone and charger with you at all times.
Be safe and have a good storm event.
